Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb (uterus). The growths are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue and vary in size. They’re sometimes known as ‘uterine myomas’ or ‘leiomyomas’. Many people are unaware they have fibroids because only around 1 in 3 experience symptoms.
Those who do have symptoms may experience: heavy periods, painful periods, tummy (abdominal) pain, lower back pain, frequent need to urinate (wee), constipation or pain / discomfort during sex.
For an overview on Fibroids, how to get diagnosed and treatment options have a look at the NHS 111 Wales website.
British Fibroid Trust is a UK based voluntary not-for-profit patient support Group which is run by volunteers.
